MISSION STATEMENT

“To be Christ's hands, feet and heart to those in the world in need, to serve others - - both near and far, regardless of race, creed, nationality or gender, and to inspire our Church Body to share their gifts and their talents through chosen ministries, all as one team, moving in one direction - - God's direction.”

Mission is an important aspect of First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside. It is a place where “Mission” is not just a word - - it is an action. With the guidance of God, it is a way in which our congregation can seek and reach out locally and globally to those in need through financial support or through the giving of our time, energies and talents. Our eyes, ears and hearts continually remain open to see, hear and feel how it is God is leading us to discover ways that we can do His work through the Missions Committee.

Mission Ministry Team Activities

MISSION REPORT

Angel Tree/Prison Fellowship Program

Every year at Christmas time our congregation reaches out to help break the cycle of crime by sharing the love of Christ with children of prison inmates. We obtain a list of children in our area whose parents are in prison and we ensure the children are not forgotten. The members of our congregation pick up a paper angel with a child’s name and Christmas wish and the member purchases the item, wraps it and the child knows someone loves them at Christmas. We have two gifts per child, a toy and a clothing item.

The Peacemaking Offering

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). God is continually at work in the world offering healing, wholeness, mercy, justice and peace. God’s peace is offered wherever there is brokenness; in individual lives, families, congregations, communities, nation and creation. Every year we ask the congregation to donate to the Peacemaking Offering to help support a variety of peacemaking efforts, 25% of your donation would be retained by our church to distribute locally, 25% of your donation is used by synods and presbyteries and 50% goes to the General Assembly ministries. The peacemaking offering will be collected on World Communion Sunday in October when Christians around the world gather to eat the bread and drink the cup offered by Christ, the Prince of Peace. It is a day to pray for unity with Christ and each other and for peace in all the lands of the earth.

Interfaith Shelter

For over 20 years, the Interfaith Shelter Network has called upon the churches and congregations of the area to open their hearts and their halls to approximately 12 homeless people including individuals and families with children. We provide a safe night’s shelter for two weeks and an evening meal. The Mission of the Interfaith Shelter is to coordinate the efforts of participating congregations, social services and governmental programs in order to provide shelter and other resources to homeless individuals and families and enable those we serve to move towards self-sufficiency while respecting their dignity as children of God.

The Michaelle House

A residential home where men and women disabled by HIV/AIDS can receive comprehensive care and services in order to rebuild their health and regain their highest possible level of independence, or where they can spend their last days in comfort and dignity.

Volunteers are always welcome to prepare a Sunday dinner for the residents. You do not have to be a gourmet cook, the residents are grateful for anything you would serve to your family. Past meals have included hotdogs and beans, spaghetti, casseroles, chicken and pizza. Prayerfully consider giving of your time to this ministry.

The Women’s Resource Center

The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is dedicated to serving the needs of individuals and families threatened or victimized by domestic violence and sexual assault. Temporary shelter, supportive services, group and individual counseling as well as preventive education are among the emergency assistance programs offered by the WRC.

Interfaith Coastal Service Center

Emergency services agency helping persons in crisis situations providing assistance for food, transportation, clothing, medical appointments, case management and much more.

Besides monetary support, the congregation has taken this ministry to their hearts. Several members volunteer their time at the Center and a monthly opportunity to donate food and diapers is afforded to the congregation.

Spirit of Christmas Fair

The Spirit of Christmas is held every November in hopes of extending the love of God to our neighbors in need. Representative from approximately 20 missions/organizations gather in the Great Hall to tell the congregation about their ministry and outreach programs. Crafts from Third World Countries are available for sale with the proceeds going back to the craftsmen. If a mission or organization speaks to someone’s heart, they would have the opportunity to donate to it.

OUR MISSIONARIES

Howard Major - Amor Ministries

“AMOR MINISTRIES is… a non-profit religious organization whose mission is to provide housing for the poor while focusing on the needs of the local church”. Congregation travels to Mexico yearly to build home for a family in need.

The annual AMOR Ministry Mexico trip usually takes place during the summer. The trip is usually made up of 15 people who volunteer their time and talents to construct a home. They handle everything from preparing a cement foundation, framing the structure, installing a roof to stuccoing the house and everything in between. Below are some photographs of a past AMOR trip.
